Gold Coast Marathon
A tent city has been set up in Southport for the 2010 Gold Coast Marathon. This marathon is sponsored by the Gold Coast airport and is the most level marathon in Australia. The reason it is the flattest marathon in Australia is because it runs along the coastline of the beautiful Gold Coast.
If a competitor does not think they have the stamina for the 42 kilometer marathon there is always the choice of the half marathon, 10 kilometer run, the 5 kilometer challenge, and the junior races.
The marathon is run on the first weekend in July. This is the 3rd and 4th of July 2010. Many of the beachfront roads will be completely closed so do not attempt to drive along these streets as you will be turned away to avoid interupting the race.
At this stage rain is predicted for Saturday and it should be mostly fine for Sunday. It will be a cool start at around 8oC so if you are not running it would be a good idea to wear layers so you can remove them as the day warms up.
We watched the atheletes at Labrador and Runaway Bay in 2009 and enjoyed an early lunch in one of the parks while the runners continued to battle it out on the course.
There are hydration stations and toilets along the entire length of the course.
The spectators in the lower left kept an eye on things to make sure no shortcuts were taken.
Will records be broken in 2010? Time will tell, I'm sure some new PB will be set this year.
